Get Out: Spotlight on Center Stage

Check out this list of cultural happenings in and around northeast Queens

It's time to hit the town for a few nights of culture by taking in the plays, concerts and films that abound in our 'Neck of the woods.

Starting with Shakespeare's Othello, residents can enjoy what promises to be a spirited interpretation of a play with more drama than any reality TV program.

Also this weekend, the most diverse neighborhood in the most diverse county in the nation plays host to cinema with a global perspective at the Queens World Film Festival.

Or if you are looking to celebrate past cultural triumphs, check out the irrepressible hit-maker Connie Francis, doing yet another star turn at Colden Auditorium on Saturday.

Shakespeare’s Othello
Where/When:  Queensborough Community College, 222-05 56th Ave., Oakland Gardens, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Why Go:  Don’t miss this Shakespearian classic performed by the QCC's Speech, Theatre and Communication Arts Department. This is your chance to hear some of Shakespeare’s famous quotations delivered by the characters, live on stage.
Pricing: Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for seniors; $3 for students and faculty.

The Queens World Film Festival
Where/When:
The festival will be hosted in Jackson Heights, beginning Thursday at Jackson Heights Cinema, 40-31 82nd St. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, films will be screened at Jackson Heights Cinema and Renaissance Charter School, located at 35-59 81st St.
Why Go: The annual cinematic fest maintains an ever-evolving edge by offering something for everyone. Student filmmakers and film amateurs present the gritty and the glamorous on a variety of subjects.
Pricing: $10 opening; $6 for screenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A 3-day festival pass is $36. 


Where/When:
 Colden Auditorium at Queens College, 6530 Kissena Blvd., Flushing, on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Why Go: America’s Sweetheart of Song is still going strong more than 50 years after her singing debut. This world-famous songstress is known for launching hits including “Where the Boys Are” and “Who’s Sorry Now?” The No. 1 selling music legend continues to mesmerize audiences with her timeless voice.
Pricing:  $75 (front orchestra), $65 (rear orchestra) and $55 (mezzanine). A Meet and Greet after-performance is $25.


Where/When: The New York Helmsley Hotel, 212 E. 42nd St., Manhattan on Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Why Go: Get expert advice from the National Association of Professional Organizers on how to get organized and be ready to impress your co-workers when you return to work on Monday.
Pricing: Registration is $90.


Where/When:
St. Ignatius Jesuit Retreat House at 251 Searingtown Road, Manhasset, on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Why Go: Compelling author and speaker Elizabeth Bettina, who wrote “It Happened in Italy,” recounts the little-known story of a heroic town in Italy that rescues Jewish citizens during the Holocaust.
Pricing: $15 for adults; $10 for students.
