Get Out: Summer Solstice and Father’s Day Fireworks

Summertime officially begins with a drum circle, a carnival, or a relay race for cancer near your neighborhood.

Start this weekend by marching to your own beat. Celebrate the summer solstice (June 21) a little early by dancing in a lively drum circle at Alley Pond. Then, did you ever wonder how Fort Totten was founded? Find out on a guided walking tour. The park rangers will tell you all you need to know!

On Sunday, treat your dad to a parade of fire trucks and fireworks at the Garden City Park Fire Department Festival. It’s the perfect Father’s Day present complete with bells and whistles!

 
When/Where: Alley Pond Environmental Center, 22806 Northern Blvd., Little Neck, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Why Go: Dance to the rhythm of a drum circle in honor of the summer solstice with performance artist, Wendy Moscow. She’ll teach you all the right moves to celebrate the longest day of the year. Bring your own drum. It’s part of the fun!
Pricing: $12 for advance tickets; $15 for tickets at the door.

When/Where: Bayside High School, 32nd Ave. and 208th Street, on Saturday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Why Go: Get on your mark, get set, and go! Run for a great cause on Bayside High School’s athletic field. It’s sponsored by the high energy Relay for Life Asian Initiatives chapter.
Pricing: Donations are welcome.

When/ Where: Fort Totten’s Visitor Center inside the park, 212th Street and Bell Boulevard, on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Why Go: Explore the history behind Fort Totten on a guided tour with your family. Friendly park rangers will be glad to walk you around and explain the ins and outs of the park. Learn all the surprising facts!
Pricing: Event is free.

When/Where: Michael J. Tully Park, 1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park, Friday until Sunday, from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Why Go: See why the fire department is still thriving after 100 years. This carnival is just in time for Father’s Day. Be part of the parade and don’t miss the fireworks show!
Pricing: Event is free.

 
When/Where: The Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City, on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Why Go: The creative acting troupe presents their version of the award winning play by Nobel Laureate Harold Pinter. Set in London, this provocative play is full of tense moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Pricing: Suggested donation $20.
