Get Out: Apple Fest and Irish Heritage

Enjoy a great weekend with these activities all near your neighborhood.

Fall fun is in full harvest!

So, we are packing your itinerary with apple fests, high-end book fairs and science art exhibits. This year’s apple festival at Queens County Farm Museum could yield a record-breaking giant apple cobbler. It only proves size does matter.

Travel to LIC and explore the edgy world of the NY Art Book Fair. You can peruse, opine or simply make a purchase. Then experience the chain reaction of winning science projects at the Digital’11 art exhibit in the New York Hall of Science.

And finally, celebrate the halfway mark to St. Patrick’s Day by attending the Long Beach Irish Heritage parade and toasting with a pint or two of Guinness beer. The season is ripe with possibilities.

Where/When: Queens County Farm Museum, 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, Floral Park, on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Why Go: From Granny Smith to Red Delicious, frolic in the farm’s orchard with nature’s apple harvest and play games. Then watch bakers make a giant apple cobbler that could set a new record. Even Johnny Appleseed would be proud!

Where/When: Parade route is on W. Beech Street between Grand Boulevard and Nevada Avenue, Long Beach, on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Why Go: As Irish luck would have it, you don’t need to wait for St. Patrick’s Day to celebrate Celitc heritage. This parade is halfway until the big day in March and will keep your eyes smiling with plenty of Irish, music, dancing, trinkets, and of course, beer.

Pricing: Free admission

Where/When: Alley Pond Environmental Center, 228-06 Northern Boulevard, Douglaston, on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Why Go: The grand opening of Alley Pond’s enhanced boardwalk will include tasty treats and a guided tour. Don’t miss this exclusive premiere. It’s nature’s own red-carpet event.

Pricing: $50 per person; or $75 each pair of tickets

 

Where/When: MoMa P.S.1, The Classroom Gallery U (third floor), 22-25 Jackson Ave., Long Island City, beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. Also runs Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

Why Go: Browse through an eclectic collection of art books, catalogs and zines from around the world that will be on display. Serious book lovers can take an artist-led workshop and attend the documentary film screening of “The Typographic Matchmaking in the City,” about art in public spaces.

Pricing: Free admission

 

Where/When: New York Hall of Science, 47-01 111th St., Corona, open daily. Check for exhibit times.

Why Go: Explore the world of chemistry through a scientist’s mind. This display is a winning collection from the Hall’s 13th International Competition and Exhibition of Digital Prints.

Pricing: Adults pay $11; kids ages 2 to 17 pay $8 

 

Where/When: Douglaston’s Long Island Railroad Station, along 235th Street, Douglaston, on Sunday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Why Go: Tricky Mother Nature kept it away last week. This time, prepare for a full cavalcade of local artists as they showcase their wares. You’ll also enjoy a performance by a dance group and the Zion Episcopal Church’s theater group.
