Cunningham Park Movie Screenings Kick Off Thursday

Councilman Mark Weprin is sponsoring free movies at the park - beginning with "The Music Man" - throughout August.

Councilman Mark Weprin, D-Oakland Gardens, will co-sponsor a series of free outdoor movies at Cunningham Park in August.

The films will be screened at 8 p.m. near the park’s bocce courts. The first screening, “The Music Man,” will take place tonight.

On Aug. 8, local residents will be able to watch the animated film “The Lorax,” which is based on the Dr. Seuss book.

Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 thriller “North by Northwest,” which stars Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint, will play on Aug. 15.

The Academy Award winning musical “Les Miserables” will screen on Aug. 22, while the comedy “Kinky Boots,” which inspired the popular Broadway musical, will play on Aug. 29.

The events have been co-sponsored by the Friends of Cunningham Park and the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee.

Moviegoers may reach the bocce courts by entering the park through the parking lot on Union Turnpike at 196th Place.

All screenings are free.
