This Civil War fortress is still an active military base.  With $15,000 in funds appropriated by Congress, the…More fort was built  on Long Island Sound to help fortify New York Harbor.</p> <p>Soon after its construction in 1862, the Fort became defensively obsolete due to developments in artillery, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation.  Today it is used for military housing and FDNY and NYC Department of Parks and Recreation operations.
