Whiz Kid: Jesse Beckerman

Spotlight on a local teen with a passion for conservation who recently made Eagle scout.

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kids honoree.

Each week, Little Neck Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens, and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. So submit your nomination in our comment box below or send an e-mail to laurene@patch.com. Be sure to include information on all the bulleted items below, and don't forget to include a photo.

Our honoree this week is Jesse Beckerman

Name: Jesse Beckerman

Ages: 17

School: Bay Ridge Prep High School

Accomplishments:
• Becoming an Eagle Scout.
• Being selected as one of 1200 scouts to represent the United States at the 2011 World Jamboree.

Key To Awesomeness:

Even as a young scout, Jesse was a consummate conservationist, incredibly interested in environmental protection, who volunteered countless hours to local rejuvenation projects, like the annual spring cleanup of the Udalls Cove Preserve.

One crowing example of his dedication to public service includes restoring a section of Aurora's Pond which had become overgrown with weeds and debris, and the installation of a double split rail fence around the area—a project that require 50 hours of his own time as well as 100 hours of volunteer time from his fellow scouts.

But in addition to a staunch dedication to serving his community, Jesse has also worked against the odds of a learning disability to become an Eagle Scout, a distinction bestowed upon only four percent of all scouts.
