Lighting A Path To The Future

Community unites for annual Katy Grogan scholarship walk-a-thon.

A community will band together for a special memorial walk-a-thon in Bayside to help raise money for a scholarship to Arch Bishop Molloy High School, Thursday evening.

On February 15th, 2008 Kaitlyn Maureen Grogan was hit by a car in Florida. A graduate of Sacred Heart of Jesus school, at the tender age of 18, Kaitlin and had already touched so many lives in a positive way.

The special event is in its fourth year, and the organizer, Terrence Grogan, Kaitlyn’s father, chose a walk-a-thon to honor Kaitlyn’s memory because  she was an athlete who adored her high school.

The location, Raymond O’connor park also has a special significance for the Grogans.

“It’s where I had to teach my daughter to play soccer, and that’s where we spent a lot of time,” according to Terrence. It’s also where Katy had met her mentor and coach, Elliot Allen, a World Cup soccer player from Trinidad.

“Elliot took her under his wing, and that’s why this location has a special meaning,” added Grogan.

The Katy Grogan Scholarship fund combines the love of sport and the love of education. The fund hopes to raise enough money to offer a full scholarship  to Arch Bishop Molloy High School.

Next year, we are hoping to send two students, said Grogan.

The Walk-a-Thon will be held on June 9th, at Raymond O’Conner park, across from Bayside High School from 6pm-8pm. Followed by a reception at the Knights of Columbus Council #4255 on Bell Blvd.
