How to Beat the Heat

Here are some tips for staying safe in the hazardous heat.

This article was written by Megan Riesz.

The heat wave isn't over yet — with high temperatures expected to continue into Friday night. The National Weather Service reissued its heat advisory, which will remain in effect until 8 p.m. July 19.

With heat index values in the triple digits, the city's Office of Emergency Management will keep cooling centers open across the five boroughs to help residents stay out of the potentially health-threatening heat.

You should also really keep some of these OEM cooling tips in mind through Saturday:

  • Watch out for heat stress. Symptoms include hot, dry skin or cold, clammy skin, dizziness, naseau, disorientation, trouble breathing or rapid heartbeat.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and those who have trouble leaving their homes and apartments.
  • Wear light clothing in light colors
  • Drink water, obviously.
  • Stay in the shade if outdoors, keep the AC on inside if possible.
  • Gather at areas like pools, malls or movie theaters.
  • Wear sunscreen
  • Keep children and pets OUT of hot cars.
