Mets Pitcher R.A. Dickey Wins Cy Young Award

Dickey is the first knuckleballer in baseball history to win award.

Disappointing as the Mets' season was this year, there is at least one bright spot: starting pitcher R.A. Dickey became the first knuckleballer in baseball history to take home a Cy Young Award.

Dickey had 20 wins this season with the Mets, and a scoreless innings streak that outshined even a no-hitter by his bullpen brother Johan Santana.

"For me, this is an honor to be shared," Dickey said in an interview on MLB Network. "This is a great honor and I am not a self-made man by any stretch of the imagination, there have been countless people who have poured into me in ways that have changed my life, not only on the field, but off."

Dickey also gave credit to the New York Mets fan base for supporting him late in the year when the team was out of contention.

State Sen. Toby Stavisy, D-Whitestone, whose district includes Citi Field, congratulated Dickey on his award.

“R.A. Dickey has proven that he’s not just a great knuckleballer, but he has proven to be one of the great ambassador’s of New York sports,” Stavisky said.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
