Lady Commodores Best Thomas Edison

The spirit of competition filled Bayside High School gymnasium last night as the school's Lady Commodores and Thomas Edison's Lady Inventors traded shots in a game that went into overtime in the fourth quarter with a 38-38 stalemate.

Hero:

Bayside’s point guard, Cheska Mauban (#11). Standing a petite five feet and four inches, Cheska sprinted across the court. A superior athlete with amazing balance, Cheska delivered an amazing performance in many roles, ultimately delivering several tie breaking points in each quarter.

The Turning Point:

Tied 27-27 at halftime with 30 seconds on the board, Edison players #23 and #24 stole the rock and ran up to deliver back-to-back breakaway shots. Penetrating Edison’s soft defenses, Bayside point guard Cheska Mauban stepped up and launched Bayside into the lead with an unlikely two-point shot. Fans and players alike could not believe their eyes.

Bottom Line:

Bayside Head Coach Steve Piorkowski encourages teamwork and sportsmanship, and the results could be felt on the court. Communication played a major factor in Bayside’s punch for punch victory and was something that wasn’t so noticeable with Edison’s players.

The team spoke with each other often - at times directing its attention to coach Piorkowski for his enthusiastic game winning advice.

“Winning feels good” remarked Coach Pieorkowski who credited the hard fought victory to great team work and excellent communication. “The girls work well together.” He added, “We may have won, but we made a few mistakes and there’s still a lot to learn here.”
