Bloomberg to Hang Steelers Symbol in the City

For mayors, gambling is a terrible vice.

The Jets weren’t the only important New Yorkers to be taken down by Pittsburgh on Sunday.

A wager between Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl placed on the outcome of yesterday’s Jets vs. Steelers may leave Bloomberg digesting some humble pie.

The New York Jets lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 24-19 during Sunday’s playoff game.

According to the terms of the bet, Bloomberg must deface a New York City landmark by hanging a Steelers “Terrible Towel,” on it. If Pittsburgh had lost, Ravenstahl would have had to do likewise on a marker of his city with a Jets Fireman hat.

The Office of the Mayor hasn’t decided yet which landmark Bloomberg will hang the Sleelers fan symbol on. The act will be filmed and posted on YouTube.

“Peyton, down. Brady, down. Big Ben is next. I have a shiny, new number six Jets jersey picked out and ready for Mayor Ravenstahl,” said Bloomberg while talking smack before the game.

He spoke too soon. Per the terms of their bet, Bloomberg will also assemble care packages to members of the armed forces who have recently returned home to Pittsburgh—while wearing a Steelers jersey.

The care packages, which will include items like gift cards for gas or groceries, are to help ease the service members’ transition back home. Ravenstahl is also to participate in a service project, though probably not in a Jets jersey.

“Regardless of the outcome of the game,” Bloomberg said before the Jets’ were taken down, “this is a great opportunity to give back and tell some of the men and women in uniform ‘thanks for taking care of us.’”

“After this game, the only Jet that will be going to Dallas is the one carrying the Steelers,” Ravenstahl rightly predicted. His team will face the Green Bay Packers in Dallas on Feb. 6.
