Bayside Girls Hoopsters Stymie Springfield Gardens

Lady Commodores' balanced attack powers team to comeback victory

For the second straight game, head coach Stephen Piorkowski rotated his starters with subs in the first half.

While his subs played decently, Bayside fell behind at halftime. Fortunately for the , their starters responded in the second half, outplaying Springfield Gardens High School to win the contest, 54-40.
 
Bayside (7-2) jumped out to a 22-12 first quarter lead, but the Lady Golden Eagles were able to dribble their way back into the game, outscoring the opposition 14-3 in the second period for a 26-24 halftime advantage.
 
With the starting five back in the game, the Lady Commodores were able to establish control, and reclaimed the lead at 32-30 on a bucket by senior Cheska Mauban.
From there, Bayside posted seven more points before Springfield Gardens hit a basket to end the third quarter at 39-32.
 
In the fourth stanza, the Lady Commodores refused to relent, posting 15 points while holding the opposition to eight. Bayside closed out the remaining 4:42 of the affair on a 9-0 run.
 
The Lady Commodores received solid contributions from four different players, with Mauban leading the way with 20 points in limited action. Senior scored 10 points, while junior and senior added nine and six, respectively, in the victory.
 
Searching for additional firepower from Bayside’s bench, is holding open auditions for the playoffs during the rest of the season.
 
"What I am going to try and do is have some of those kids be integrated with the starting five in playoff structure," Piorkowski explained.
"So, I’m putting them out there right now, telling all 10 of them that I’m only looking for maybe 3 of them to step-up for the playoffs to add to the five that are starting," Piorkowski added. "Barring injury or anything else, these ten are fighting for about three or four spots. So they got to show me what they’re capable of doing."
 
As far the starting five go, said, "The starters played real well. If you looked at the time that they were on the floor, you take away the 21 points when my non-starters were out there, they [Lady Golden Eagles] scored 19 points against them in three quarters."
 
Bayside travels to Campus Magnet for a game on Jan. 13 at 4:30 p.m.
