Bayside Girl’s Basketball Wins Season Opener, 58-13, Against Springfield Gardens

Utilize great defense and trio of scorers in lopsided victory

The Commodores came ready to play, establishing a 16-7 lead in the first quarter. To make matters worse for the Golden Eagles, Bayside's defense refused to relent, allowing just two measly points in the second period, building a 29-9 advantage at half time.

Bayside outscored its opponents 20-0 in the third stanza, and the rest was academic, as head coach Stephen Piorkowski gave his subs the opportunity to play and close out the contest.

The Turning Point:

The Commodores blanked Springfield Gardens in the third period, taking a commanding 49-9 lead going into the fourth quarter, cementing the game.

The Quote:

"They played very, very well," Piorkowski said. "The played excellent defense, obviously. We're working on offense. We got the ball a little rapidly to the basket, and took the first shot that we saw. I think if we settle down, we start reading the defense a little bit better, get better offensive opportunities, we'll play a lot better."

However, Piorkowski did cut his team some slack.

"This is the first game of the year," he explained. "We're trying to get the system going. Once we get the system going, the game will be a lot smoother for them."

The Bottom Line:

Bayside's tenacious defensive press proved too much for the Golden Eagles, forcing them to make several mistakes over the course of the tilt. The Commodores took advantage of the bevy of Springfield's miscues, scoring in transition throughout the affair.

Key Stat:

Bayside controlled the glass, grabbing the majority of rebounds in the contest.
