Bayside Girls Basketball Upends School Of Teaching

Lady Commodores utilize trio of scores to de-claw Lady Tigers

Bayside High School girls varsity basketball team played an uneven first half, but it manage to pull itself together in the second half and defeat host Queens High School of Teaching, 48-29.

Head coach Stephen Piorkowski rotated his five starters with five subs for short period of times, with the Lady Commodores falling behind 8-4 in the first period.

However, Bayside was able to bounce back, outscoring Queens High School of Teaching 9-4 to take a 13-12 lead at half time.

With its starters handling the majority of playing time in the third quarter, the Lady Commodores built a 28-19 advantage over the Lady Tigers (2-6), and never looked back.

The fourth period was pretty much of the same, as Bayside played solid defense and sunk five baskets to start the quarter before Queens High School of Teaching responded with a three-pointer that put the score at 38-22.

By then, however, the Lady Commodores had established a commanding lead, and refused to relinquish it the rest of the way.

Senior Joey Chan drained a game-high 16 points, while fellow upperclassmen Cheska Mauban and Syndy Durugordon chipped in with 12 and nine, respectively.

With the playoffs five weeks away, Piorkowski said it wasn't too early for his squad to begin thinking about the postseason, offering up pearls of coaching wisdom that ignited his girls in the second half.

"I said, 'If you're going to be a playoff caliber team, you have to execute on the floor what you're capable of doing," Piorkowski lamented to his girls. "So, we showed signs of that offensively, and I told them in the fourth quarter 'this is now your playoff game.

Do not lose your focus. The opponent is not Queens High School of Teaching, it's yourself. Go out there and play playoff-style basketball. Don't turn it over, score points,' and they put 20 points up."

Bayside travels to Springfield Gardens High School Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
