Bayside Girls Basketball Topped by John Adams, 47-46

Shooting Woes Continue to Plague Lady Commodores in Tough Road Loss

It was a nail-biting Queens A East showoff for Bayside High School's girls basketball team.

Unfortunately, the Lady Commodores weren't able to dribble away with the win, losing 47-46 to host John Adams Tuesday night.

Bayside had its chances. With less than 25 seconds remaining in the game, the team missed two prime opportunities to take the lead, but wound up missing both three-point attempts.

Hero:

The Turning Point:

Bayside (9-4) pulled ahead 44-42 on two successful free throws from junior Ashley Mitchell with 2:13 remaining on the clock. But Kanhove drilled a key trey for a 45-44 advantage with 1:55 left in the game. John Adams never looked back from there.

Bottom Line:

The Lady Commodores missed 25 shots, many of which were solid open looks, head coach Stephen Piorkowski said.

Quotable:

Piorkowski summed up the defeat to the team’s ongoing poor shooting effort, saying that a successful basket down the stretch would’ve changed Bayside’s fate.

"We missed a lot shots," Piorkowski lamented. "I was chastising my three seniors guards. I was counting the number of shots that they missed. We had two shots that could’ve won the game, and we muffed them both--0 for 2. We go 1 for 2 and we win the game - it’s that simple."

Piorkowski added that his club has to play with more mettle and motivation in order to win come playoff time.

"You can look at it anyway you want," he said, "but I was saying to my girls, ‘You guys come out in the third quarter and you’re flat.’ You can’t play basketball that way. You can’t play basketball without heart and desire. They tell me in private that they want to win, that they want to get ready for the playoffs. But that’s how we get ready for the playoffs?"
