Bayside Girls Basketball Takes Down Van Buren, 67-45

Joey Chan Scores 25 Points and Squad Steps Up in Absence of Star Point Guard

's girls basketball team played last night sans standout point guard , who was out of the lineup because of a commitment to her future college, Babson.

Notions that the Lady Commodores might have trouble putting up points in Mauban's absence were quickly dispelled as the team defeated Martin Van Buren, 67-45.

At first, it didn’t appear to be an easy night for the Lady Commodores as Van Buren’s outside precision shooting put them in a 20-18 hole before  nailed a three-pointer to end the first period and put them ahead, 21-20, for the rest of the game.

Turning Point:

Up 21-20 at the start of the second quarter, the Lady Commodores went on a 16-0 run that staked them to a 37-20 halftime advantage.

It wasn’t until the 6:02 mark of the third period when Bayside finally surrendered a basket, marking almost ten minutes of scoreless basketball for the home team. By then, the Lady Commodores had built a sizable 43-22 advantage.

Bottom Line:

Bayside (11-4) controlled the boards, providing its offense with many second chance opportunities throughout the contest. Plus, the Lady Commodores played a solid defensive game, pressing the Fighting Veebees into several mistakes.

Quotable:

Head coach was pleased with just about every aspect of his team’s performance, saying Bayside didn’t miss a beat without Mauban.

Moreover, he said if his girls continue to play well from the perimeter and in the paint, they’ll be tough to beat come playoff time.

"It was a very good game," the veteran coach said. "They played very well without her. It was probably one of our best games we’ve played all season long. If we can get an inside- outside game going, we’re going to do well in the playoffs."
