Bayside Girls Basketball Falls, 32-27, To Hillcrest

Poor shooting effort leads to Lady Commodores' demise in battle of undefeated squads

Bayside High School varsity girls' basketball team had its opportunities to keep its record unblemished against host Hillcrest High School in a Queens A division game. But terrible shooting from the field and foul line ultimately doomed the Lady Commodores, 32-27.

Bayside dribbled out to a 10-6 lead in the first period, and finished the half strong, going into the locker room ahead, 19-15.

However, the Lady Commodores managed just four points in the third quarter, while the Lady Hawks posted 12 for a 27-23 advantage.

Bayside's shooting woes continued in the fourth period, scoring just six points while holding Hillcrest to five. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to surmount Hillcrest (4-0) in the end. It was Bayside's first loss of the season.

Junior Ashley Mitchell led the Lady Commodores with eight points and senior Joey Chan added six in the defeat. Senior center Ruth Paul drained a game-high 12 points and Danielle Pearce had nine for the Lady Hawks.

Bayside shot a dismal 3-18 from the charity stripe, head coach Stephen Piorkowski noted.

When asked to sum up the reason for the loss, Piorkowski simply replied: "Poor offense. We just don't shoot well; we shot poorly. We have a very poor shooting team."

Though senior scoring threat Cheska Mauban was absent from the lineup due to a college interview, Piorkowski refused to use it as a reason for the defeat.

"It's not an excuse. Kids got to step up," he lamented. "Some of the kids didn't even score their average. When your one of leading scorers is not here, then the rest of the team has to step up. It's an opportunity for them to do it. They did it for the most part. They challenge in the first half, then they faded in the second half. You go to hit shots."

Bayside travels to John Bowne High School tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. for a non-league game.
