A League of The Grown

Local football league for adults to kick off its thirty-third season.

Are you ready for some football?

Well get ready to lace up your cleats and head out to the field gentlemen because the Flushing Bayside Sports Football League is about to kick off a brand new year.

Flushing Bayside Sports Football is an 'adults only' competitive touch-football league and according to the Liquori Family, which owns and operates the sports entertainment venue, opening game is something they look forward to all summer long.

"It’s a feel good, have a good time environment and everybody is part of the family," said league president Vince Liquori.

For at least one veteran of Flushing Bayside sports, however, a new season means only one thing.

"Winning!  There's nothing else to look forward to but that," said Anthony Torello, who's played in the league since 1998.

Though for league VP Steve Liquori, Vince's eldest son, it's also about the game.

"I enjoy watching the new talent mature and seeing if they [the new teams] have what it takes to bring down some of the league veterans," Steve added.

With typically three to four divisions setup according to a team's skill level, the Liquoris stress there's a little something for everyone.

"We always have an 'A' league for those guys that are really into the competitive aspect of the game, but we also have 'B' and see 'C' division for the weekend warrior just out to have a some fun," Steve Liquori said.

Adding on to this sentiment, Vince pointed out that what's best about a league like Flushing Bayside Sports Football is that it provides people with a way to unwind that is healthy.

"Plus it's a great way for a guy to escape the family, forget about work and focus on nothing else than the game at hand—even if just for a few hours," he said.

And if you ask Torello, that's exactly what playing in the FBSF league does.

"It's a true adrenalin rush for me. For those 60 minutes, don't call me your friend. We can gossip about what your family or what you did on Friday some other time because Sunday, it's time to turn all attention to the game," Torello said.

This year's fall season runs from September through December, with enough space for 48 teams of up 15 players to sign up and there's still three weeks left for registration.

But the Liquoris are quick to point out that the league roster, which is handled on a first-come-first-serve basis, fills up quick.
