Homeschooling Toddlers

Homeschooling Todders

Typically, write for the "Local Voice" for East Hampton Patch. But I spend most of my time in Bayside, some weekends and summers out in East Hampton. I go out east because my husband’s family owns a restaurant out in Amagansett and he works there in the summers.

Being fairly new (two years) to Bayside and a full-time mother of 25-month-old identical twin girls, Ava and Liv, I've decided to skip day care, nursery school and home school my daughters.

After hours of research, I decided that homeschooling is best for my family and me. When the time comes to go to pre-school at the age of four, I will reevaluate my decision. Considering that my husband is a teacher, they most likely will eventually go to school at some point (private or public.)

I've just recently started to get them on a simple schedule and curriculum. I take them to Gymboree, the local library and the park for the obvious reason of social interaction. Being fairly new to the homeschooling scene in Bayside, I could only wonder if there were other parents who meet to discuss homeschooling. If so, I would be very interested in attending. Or, I'd liked to start one of my own if I get enough responses. It would be good to exchange homeschooling tips with other parents, share our struggles and success stories as well.

I can easily be reached at Patch by leaving a comment or e-mailing me at: sofiastipanov@gmail.com.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
