Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Nathan.Duke@patch.com. Be sure to include all of the information you see below, and a photo. Our honoree this week is Jesse Beckerman.

  • Name: Jesse Beckerman
  • Age: 17
  • School: Bay Ridge Prep High School
  • Accomplishment: Making it to the rank of Eagle Scout

Kids’ Key to Awesomeness: Jesse has worked against the odds of his learning disabilities and has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Only four percent of all Scouts attain the rank of Eagle.

He has always been interested in protecting and improving our environment. As a younger scout, he was involved with smaller projects sponsored by Udalls Cove Preservation Committee, a non-profit organization that protects the natural area in Douglaston.

One section near the inlet of Little Neck Bay is Aurora Pond. It had become overgrown with weeds and debris, making it dangerous for people to walk. Jesse, with the support of Udalls Cove and a grant from Home Depot, organized and planned the cleanup and installation of 150 feet of a double split rail fence. Jesse dedicated more than 50 hours of his own time and had more than 100 hours donated by members of his troop and others.
