'This Has Not Worked Out,' Says Bloomberg of Cathie Black

Schools Chancellor Cathie Black departs as head of the public school system after only three months on the job.

A decision which Mayor Michael Bloomberg described as "mutual," Schools Chancellor Cathie Black will step down from her post as head of the public school system.

"I will say I take full responsiblity for the fact that this has not worked out as either of us had hoped and expected," said Bloomberg.

Black was a high-level magazine executive when Bloomberg tapped her to take over for her predecessor, Joel Klein.

Black, who had no previous experience in education, and who sent her own children to private school, was an unpopular choice.

A NY1-Marist poll this week held her approval rating at 17 percent.

Bloomberg credited Black with working tirelessly to learn the ins-and-outs of the public school system.

"I think she has done an admirable job plunging herself into the job," said Bloomberg.

Deputy Mayor Dennis Walcott, who began his public service career as a kindergarten teacher, served on the board of education, and who Bloomberg said has had a hand in shaping much of City Hall's the educational policy, will be Black's replacement.

"He has been involved in our schools at every level. As a student, as a teacher, as a parent, and as a deputy mayor," said Bloomberg.
