P.S. 203 Ranked Among 25 Best in State for Common Core Tests

Oakland Gardens school's students score high on recently introduced rigorous tests.

City schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott paid a visit to Oakland Gardens’ P.S. 203 Monday after the school was ranked in the top 25 statewide for performance on new – and more difficult – standardized tests that were introduced earlier this year.

P.S. 203, located at 53-11 Springfield Blvd., was named a Blue Ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Education last fall for strong academic achievement from students at the school.

Now, it has been placed on a list of 25 schools across the state, 22 of which are in the five boroughs, that have scored highest on tests adhering to national standards known as Common Core.

“The transition to Common Core learning standards has been years in the making, but as demonstrated by these 22 schools, New York City is adjusting to the higher standards as well as anyone could have hoped,” Walcott said. “I am extremely proud of the work being done in our schools to better prepare our students for life after graduation.”

Common Core requires students to write more, think critically and defend their ideas.
