Lockdown Drills to Soon Be Required at City Schools: Report

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott sent a letter to principals this week with details of new procedure.

City schools will soon begin to hold lockdown drills to prepare faculty and students for emergency situations, NY 1 reported.

The move follows in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.

Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott sent a letter on Wednesday to principals at city schools to inform them of the new policy, according to NY 1.

School leaders must attend a two-hour training program this summer as well as appoint staff members to response teams and set up command posts to prepare for the drills.

The DOE is currently conducting lockdown drills at some city schools. During a drill, no one is allowed to exit or enter a school’s building.
