Bloomberg to Honor Scripps National Spelling Bee Winner from Bayside: Report

Arvind Mahankali, who attends M.S. 74, was expected to be honored at City Hall on Tuesday.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg will honor Bayside student Arvind Mahankali, who won the Scripps National Spelling Bee last week, at City Hall on Tuesday, 1010 Wins reported.

Mahankali, 13, who attends Bayside's M.S. 74, correctly spelled "knaidel," a German-derived Yiddish word that describes a dumpling made using matzo meal, egg, salt and other ingredients.

The eighth grader, who is an aspiring physicist, had placed third at the spelling bee for the past two years. In addition to winning this year's trophy, he also won $32,500 in cash and savings bonds as well as his own reference library.

On Monday, the spelling bee winner visited the Carnegie Deli where he tasted knaidel for the first time, 1010 Wins reported.
