Back to School: Community Service Opportunities

Make a difference this year and lend a helping hand at any of these Queens institutions.

The return of the school year is a perfect time to start giving back.

Students who were all too comfortable reveling in the lackadaisical days of their summer are often encouraged by teachers to participate in community service programs, and adults with busy schedules can take that academic reminder and decide to volunteer as well.

Below, you find ways to help those in need.

You can chop carrots at a food pantry, work with animals, tutor an elementary student, assist the aging and much more. Below are a few Queens organizations that always welcome volunteers and guides to find even more opportunities.

Entertain and assist the aging at one of these locations:

Young Israel of Forest Hills Senior League

Esther Grunblatt Russian Service Center

Queens Community House

Help those in need of extra care here:

North Shore LIJ Forest Hills Hospital

American Cancer Society

Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc

Don't know exactly what type of program is right for you? These centers serve many different purposes:

YMCA

Queens Library

Queens Zoo

Queens Jewish Community Council

Also check out NYC Service for a larger list of opportunities.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
