Avella Responds To Traffic Concerns at M.S 172

Installation of an all-way stop to increase pedestrian safety

The streets have been made safer in front of a middle school by Senator Tony Avella (D-Bayside).

After visiting Jeffrey Slivko, the principal of M.S 172 in May, who expressed concern regarding traffic conditions near the school, Senator Avella immediately contacted the DOT for an additional ‘All-way Stop’ control to help alleviate the risk to young students.

After a traffic analysis was conducted, the new controls were approved and installed at the intersection of 257th Street and 81st Avenue.

Senator Avella, who has had multiple traffic stops installed throughout northeast Queens, was asked to reveal his secret for successfully transforming the streetscape.

“I don’t know if it’s a secret,” according to Avella, who said he tries to be as responsive as possible even though some locations for new traffic controls have been met with red tape.

“This location is key because it is by the school,” said Avella, adding “The DOT is too bureaucratic in addressing these situations – it is thankful that we got one here.”
