Avella Calls on District Students to Apply for $1,500 Scholarships

Money Will Be Awarded Based on Athletic Talent or Academic Achievement

State Sen. Tony Avella, D-Bayside, is recommending that high school students from his district apply for four $1,500 scholarships that will be awarded in June.

The New York Conference of Italian American Legislators is accepting applications for the scholarships, which will be handed out to four current or future college students from the state.

Avella said two of the scholarships, which are for $1,500 each, will be awarded based on academic achievement, while another two will be for athletic talent.

“Our conference is very proud of our role in promoting higher education and assisting students in reaching their academic goals and full potential for future success in the global marketplace,” Avella said.

Each member of the conference will nominate one student for each category. Eligibility will be based on the student’s grade point average, involvement in their community, financial needs and interest in pursuing a college education, Avella said.
