West Nile Virus Found in Bay Terrace

The City has issued an alert that the West Nile Virus has been detected in zip code 11360.

The Dept. of Health today issued a warning that West Nile Virus has been detected in Bay Terrace.

The affected area has been identified as within zip code 11360.

Tests of mosquitoes or dead birds in Brookville, Rosedale and Woodhaven also turned up positive.

"The Health Department is increasing its surveillance and larviciding treatment activities in the affected areas," said Sam Friedman of the DOH. He added that the virus has not been found in any humans this year.

The DOH urges residents to protect against mosquitoes by wearing bug repellents with DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus, IR3535 or picaridin. They also encourage residents to check for holes in their window screens, and the seal.

They also stress the importance of eradicating pools of standing water, where mosquitoes can breed, and to report stagnant water with 311.
