Weprin Campaign Responds to Koch Endorsement Slight

Assemblyman attacks GOP on debt ceiling negotiations during economic struggles.

Assemblyman David Weprin’s campaign wasted little time in attacking Turner and Congressional Republicans for their actions on debt ceiling negotiations.

The campaign chose not to address Koch, or his effort to turn the Ninth District special election into a referendum on the President’s attitude toward Israel.

"Extremist Republican Bob Turner's radical plan to slash federal spending by 35 percent will destroy Medicare, social security, and our ability to provide foreign aid to allies like Israel,” said Weprin campaign spokesman Jake Dilemani in an e-mail. “Voters won't endorse that.”

The cut to federal spending that Dilemani described was mentioned by Turner in an op-ed he wrote for the National Review in June titled “The Bonfire on the Hill.”

Dilemani continued, blaming Republicans in Congress for playing too fast and loose with the economy during debt ceiling negotiations, something Koch himself did in Monday’s press conference.

“Today, Americans watched the Washington Republicans walk away from negotiations and play chicken with our economy. In contrast, David Weprin closed multi-billion budget deficits as chair of the NYC Council Finance Committee,” he wrote. “With more than 20 years of private sector experience in public finance, he understands what it takes to get our economy moving again.”
