Vallone Wins Halloran's City Council Seat

Melinda Katz bests opponents in Queens borough president race, while Rory Lancman and Mark Weprin win Council bids.

Flushing attorney Paul Vallone bested Republican Dennis Saffran, a lawyer from Douglaston, in the race for Councilman Dan Halloran’s seat on Tuesday.

With 85 percent of the total vote counted, Vallone, who is the brother of Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. and son of former Council Speaker Peter Vallone, received 57 percent of the vote, while Saffran took 42 percent, The New York Times reported.

“It’s a five-year journey that ended today and we got our District 19 Council seat back,” Vallone said to a crowd of cheering supporters at Vivaldi in Bayside. “We made a choice today. Those who want to divide don’t get a place at the table. Those who want to move forward will.”
