Update: Weiner: 'I Lied'

U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner admits to sending lewd photos, won't resign.

At a press conference in Manhattan Monday, U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner admitted to sending lewd photos and having inappropriate conversations with as many as six women over the course of the last few years.

Weiner held back tears as he read a statement, first apologizing to his wife, Huma Abedin, and their families, as well as his constituents.

"I have made terrible mistakes that have hurt the people I care about the most, and I'm deeply sorry, I have not been honest with myself, my family, my constituents, my friends, my supporters and the media," Weiner began.

"Last Friday night I tweeted a photograph of myself that I intended to send as a direct message as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle. When I realized I had posted it to twitter I panicked, and I took it down and said that I had been hacked. I then continued to stick to that story, which was a hugely regrettable mistake. ... To be clear, the picture was of me, and I sent it."

When asked, Weiner said that he did not believe he violated his Congressional oath, and had no plans to resign.

"I'm deeply regretting what I have done and I am not resigning. I have made it clear that I accept responsibility for this, people can draw conclusions about me and are free to do so," Weiner said. "I've worked for the people of my district for 13 and have been in politics for 20 years, and I hope that they see fit to see this in that light that it is, which is a deeply regrettable mistake."

Weiner's admission comes just months after an upstate congressman, Chris Lee, resigned after sending shirtless photos to women he met on Craigslist. Weiner was asked what he was thinking in light of Lee's recent foibles, and had no answer.

"I don't know what I was thinking," he said. "This was a destructive thing to do ... It was something that I did which was just wrong, and I regret it."
