Turner: Honor Iraq Vets With A Parade

Congressman says troops should have recognition, though the Pentagon is wary.

U.S. Rep. Bob Turner thinks that troops returning home from Iraq — with the war officially declared over — should get a parade in New York City’s “Canyon of Heroes.”

Turner joined several Republican contemporaries from New York City in calling for the parade, saying it would honor the service of men and women who served in one of the country’s longest-ever conflicts.

“Ever since our troops returned home from Iraq, a discussion has been occurring about the best way to honor them for their service,” Turner said in a statement. “Given the sacrifices our troops have made, with many of them doing several tours of duty, a parade in the  ‘Canyon of Heroes’ is the least we can do.”

According to CBS News, however, the Pentagon is wary of holding a parade, for fear of endangering the troops still stationed in volatile areas around the world.

“I would like to urge the President and Pentagon to work with Mayor Bloomberg and other local officials to make this parade a reality,” Turner added. “We should seize this opportunity to publicly say thank you to the brave men and women who serve our country.”
