Turner Grabs Giuliani Endorsement, Asian-American Legislators Like Weprin

As the special election draws nearer, candidates tout friends in high places.

The Bob Turner endorsement train kept plugging right along Monday, as the Republican congressional candidate picked up the approval of yet another former New York City mayor — Rudy Giuliani.

Giuliani, who also endorsed Turner in his 2010 race against former Congressman Anthony Weiner, issued a statement with the Turner campaign, saying the businessman had the chops to take on the House of Representatives.

"Congress is in dire need of business leaders like Bob Turner, not another career politician," Giuliani said. "This country needs to start creating jobs again and Bob Turner has the national and international business know-how to help move us in that direction.”

Turner’s said he was thrilled to have Giuliani’s support again, as well as the support of

“Having Mayors Giuliani and Koch behind my candidacy is a tremendous momentum builder going into next month's election,” Turner said. “Unlike my opponent, David Weprin, who supported the biggest property tax increase in city history, Mayor Giuliani understands, as I do, that middle class New Yorkers need jobs and tax relief.”

Turner’s campaign has been pushing hard against his opponent, Democratic Assemblyman David Weprin.  as well as independents breaking slightly for Turner.

Turner isn’t the only one who’s collected endorsements of late. Last week, Weprin got the seal of approval from a large group of Queens and New York-based Asian-American legislators, including New York City Comptroller John Liu and Assemblywoman Grace Meng, from Flushing.

“As chair of the Finance Committee on the City Council, David balanced eight budgets in eight years — on time without cutting critical services,” Liu said. “His experience in balancing budgets gives him the know-how we need in Washington to protect vital programs like Medicare and Social Security while helping get our nation back on a path toward fiscal sustainability.”

The election in the Ninth Congressional District will be held on Sept. 13.
