Traffic Light Coming to Hectic Hillside Avenue Intersection

The DOT announced that a traffic light will be installed at the intersection of Hillside Ave. and 266th St. by November.

Trying to turn onto Hillside Avenue from 266th Street is an exercise in automotive terror -- between the street's width and the speed of the traffic hurdling from all directions, the intersection isn't one that could currently be described as "safe."

Fortunately, the Department of Transportation intends to change that, and announced on Monday its plans to install a traffic light at the intersection by the end of November.

The light is a product of the efforts of Sen. Tony Avella, D-Bayside, who pushed for the light after receiving feedback from the Ahmed family, whose home is located near the intersection.

In July, the DOT conducted a traffic study, confirming the need for a light at the intersection.

Faruque Ahmed, whose family reached out to Avella through the senator's district-wide "Civic Action Checklist," said the light will definitely benefit the neighborhood.

"There are many young children on this block and having a stoplight here will work wonders for slowing down the traffic and eliminating any future potential accidents," he said.
