Stavisky Urges Residents to Apply for Sandy Clean-Up Jobs

Need a gig? The state is hiring clean-up workers.

State Sen. Toby Stavisky, D-Whitestone, is urging residents to apply for clean-up jobs in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Stavisky pointed to more than $27 million in Disaster National Emergency Grant assistance that will be used to hire workers to clean up the storm's aftermath.

“Since Hurricane Sandy devastated our state last month, many are still just trying to get back on their feet,” Stavisky said. “This aid will help these New Yorker’s back to work and rebuild our damaged infrastructure.”

Stavisky commended Gov. Andrew Cuomo for working to bring federal disaster assistance to the state.

“Working together is the only way we all can rebuild and ensure all New Yorkers have a happy and hopeful holiday season," Stavisky said.

To apply for jobs over the phone call 1-888-4-NYSDOL (1-888-469-7365). To apply online submit a registration form here: https://www.labor.ny.gov/secure/neg/2012-hurricane-sandy-form.asp. You can also apply in person at any local Disaster Recovery Center or One-Stop Career Center.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
