Schumer: Obama Clear Winner

Sen. Charles Schumer came out swinging for the president.

Before President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were done sparring late Tuesday, Sen. Charles Schumer took his message to the media’s Spin Alley, calling his party’s candidate the clear winner.

“He showed a president who’s calm, who’s strong and focused,” Schumer said of President Obama's latest performance.

While the night’s biggest winner was Hofstra University, which played host to the debate, Schumer said Obama connected on issues while Romney, “Got weaker and weaker and more flummoxed as the debate went on.”

“This is going to be all about the average middle class swing voter and I think that the president appealed to them, showed he understood them and had real plans to help them,” Schumer told reporters.

Schumer also issued a warning to Republicans.

“If the president wins the election – and I think after tonight it’s a little clearer that he will – I think mainstream Republicans, those who are willing to talk to us, will gain an upper hand. And the hard right people, who Romney has always appealed to, will lose some strength.”

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
