Rozic Wins Democratic Primary for 25th Assembly District

Former chief of staff to Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh defeats long-time CB 11 Chairman Jerry Iannece.

Nily Rozic bested Community Board 11 Chairman Jerry Iannece Thursday night in the race for the 25th Assembly District seat.

Rozic, 26, the former chief of staff to Manhattan Assemblyman Brian Kavanagh, received 56 percent of the vote, the New York Times reported.

Iannece, who previously ran for City Council in 2001 and 2009, took 43 percent of the vote.

Rozic, who could not immediately be reached for a comment, had said her would include health care, campaign finance reform and improvements to local schools.

The 25th Assembly seat became vacant earlier this year after Rory Lancman, D-Fresh Meadows, decided to run for the Sixth Congressional Seat after U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-Bayside, announced that he would retire. He was defeated in the Democratic primary for that seat by Assemblywoman Grace Meng, D-Flushing.

The 25th Assembly seat covers Bayside Hills, Douglaston, Oakland Gardens, Auburndale, Fresh Meadows, Hillcrest, Queensborough Hill and a sliver of Bayside.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
