Rozic Warns of STAR Tax Exemption Scams

Assemblywoman says Queens residents should not pay fees to sign up and only do so through the state or city's finance departments.

State Assemblywoman Nily Rozic, D-Fresh Meadows, is warning residents in her district about phone solicitors offering a fee-based service to apply for STAR exemptions, for which homeowners can apply for free.

Rozic, who held a workshop last month on STAR (School Tax Relief property tax exemption), said that homeowners are able to sign up for an exemption for free with the state’s Department of Taxation and Finance or the city’s Finance Department.

Enrollment in the program ends Dec. 31. The STAR rebate program is the only state-funded property tax exemption to help New Yorkers.
