Proposed Upgrades and Capital Projects for Douglaston, Little Neck

Community Board 11 has posted a document on its site that gives the rundown of all proposed for northeast Queens.

The projects, which are listed in order of priority, include everything from acquiring land for preservation to upgrading local roads.

Susan Seinfeld, district manager for CB 11, said the budget priorities are sent to the city in the fall. Then, Mayor Michael Bloomberg comes out with his preliminary budget and city agencies respond to requests from community boards.

CB 11 will then respond to the agencies to continue to push their top priorities. The City Council will vote next year for which budget items they will pay.

Here’s a rundown of proposed capital projects for Douglaston and Little Neck. Visit CB 11’s website to view the budget register, which contains all 37 requested items for the district.

The Douglaston Manor Association’s request to that has been deteriorating for years is ranked number one in all of CB 11’s district.

The project, which is being overseen by the Department of Transportation, is funded and currently in the design stage.

The for the purpose of protecting of freshwater wetlands and preserving natural wildlife habitats is ranked number three.

The aim of the project is to prevent the wetlands from being developed. The city’s Parks Department is overseeing the initiative, which is included in the agency’s 2013 budget.

In fourth place is a Department of Environmental Protection project to repair catch basins in a number of northeast Queens communities, including Douglaston, Bayside and Little Neck.

A proposal to is in seventh place. Currently, the district’s three high schools – Francis Lewis, Cardozo and Bayside – are operating at twice their capacity.

The city’s School Construction Authority is in the process of searching for an appropriate site for the school.

A project to fund a new facility for the is ranked eighth. Funding availability for the project is currently uncertain for the Queens Borough Public Library.

In ninth place, the Udalls Cove Preservation Committee is calling for the acquisition of the remaining lots at .

Currently, Parks Department funds are insufficient for the project.

A proposal to install a fence at the is ranked 10th. Golf balls frequently go over the existing fence and cause property damage to nearby homes. This project is partially funded by the City Council.

Coming in at 11th place is a trench restoration project that would fix cave-ins and depressions in the underlying sewer system at various spots in the district, including Douglaston Parkway at 61st Avenue and Rushmore Avenue between Marathon Parkway and 248th Street.

Ranked at number 21 is the interior renovation of ’s building and parking lot. Department of Parks funds are currently insufficient for the project.

Listed at number 23 is a proposal by the Douglaston Civic Association and the Douglaston Garden Club to develop Old Oak Pond as a “passive park” that would contain a pathway to the pond as well as a viewing area and benches.

The Parks Department obtained the land several years ago, but funds are currently insufficient for the project.

At number 24 is a Douglaston Local Development Corporation-proposed project to acquire vacant land on 235th Street to extend public access to parks and the waterfront.

And, in 28th place, is a Douglaston Civic Association project to resurface, add signs and benches and construct barriers with planters at Joe Michael’s Mile. Parks’ funds are currently insufficient for the project.
