New Bill to Crack Down on Gas Pump Price Gouging

Two state lawmakers want to prevent dishonest gas station owners from inflated prices.

Gas prices are soaring, but two state lawmakers want to make sure you’re not getting ripped off at the pump, too.

CBS News reports that State Sen. Eric Adams, D-Brooklyn, and state Assemblyman David Weprin, D-Little Neck, have introduced legislation to prevent price gouging, such as watered down gas or inflated prices.

Specifically, the legislation will require all gas stations in New York State to post signs near gas pumps listing contact information for the Consumer Protection Board, the article says, as well as requiring more spot checks at gas stations, and new laws to make the penalties for gouging even tougher.

“Unscrupulous owners are taking advantage of the public not knowing what the actual price should be,” Weprin told CBS News.

Last April, gas prices soared so high that state lawmakers considered over Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends, while to keep up with fuel costs.
