MTA to Provide Underground Wi-Fi to Queens Subway Stations By Late 2014: Report

Agency adds Wi-Fi to 30 stations this week.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority has expanded underground Wi-Fi to additional subway stations this week and plans to provide the service for Queens by the end of next year, 1010 Wins reported.

The MTA added service to 30 stations Thursday, including Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Columbus Circle.

The agency’s plan is to have all Wi-Fi available for all city subway stations by 2016. AT&T and T-Mobile signed 10-year contracts to provide cell and Wi-Fi service through a network being created by Transit Wireless.

“It’ll connect people and allow them, if there is an issue, they have somebody to talk to,” Transit Wireless CEO Bill Bayne told 1010 Wins. “To help dispatch some support.”

Stations that are wired for Wi-Fi offer free service to customers of the two cell phone providers. But trains are not expected to have service between stations.

Underground Wi-Fi is expected to be available in Queens stations by late 2014.
