Marijuana Decriminalization Gets Broad Support in State Assembly

Gov. Cuomo said that a bid to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana was being considered in state budget negotiations

As budget talks finalize in Albany around such issues as minimum wage increases and where casinos will be sited, one hot-button issue— the treatment of a specific type of marijuana possession in the state drug laws— is also being considered.

Members of The New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus as well as community members gathered on Tuesday to promote ending arrests for low-level possession of marijuana, one of the non-fiscal items in the budget, which is due by March 31, the Times-Union reported.

Currently, police can issue a ticket similar to the one you get for speeding for the possession of a small amount of marijuana. Caucus members argued that with the enforcement of the stop-and-frisk policy in New York City, black and Hispanic youth are unjustly stopped and disproportionately saddled with criminal records, even though studies show marijuana use is more prevalent among whites.

Noting the high costs of enforcement and the difficulty of getting into college with an arrest record, Assemblyman Karim Camara, chair of the Caucus said, "We're not only punishing the individual, we're punishing society.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed that a bid to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana was being considered in state budget negotiations with the measure receiving broad support in the Assembly but waning somewhat amongst Senate Republicans.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
