Lupica Calls for Weiner in Mayoral Race

Columnist says former Forest Hills congressman deserves another shot.

Next year's mayoral race is already shaping up to be a three-ring circus with a crop of citywide hopefuls vying for the ringleader with the most brass.

Lupca wrote a column Sunday practically begging the disgraced former congressman to get out of the political "penalty box," writing up a litany of flaws about the presumed contenders, including City Comptroller John Liu, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, D-Manhattan.

The sports columnist and sometimes political pundit argued that Weiner's downfall — sending lewd photos of himself to young women via social networks — was no worse than anything Bill Clinton did while President of the United States, and Clinton got to keep his job.

Things have changed a lot for Weiner since his resignation. He became a father and moved from Forest Hills to Manhattan. Some close to the former congressman have said he has been quietly reaching out to old staffers in preparation for a run for office, but it was unclear which seat he was eyeing.
