Less Than 100 Queens Couples Apply For Sunday Marriage Lottery

Only 91 of 112 available spots to wed at Borough Hall on Sunday were filled. The rest will go to Manhattan couples pushed out of their home borough.

Only 91 Queens couples applied for the 112 available spots to marry at Borough Hall on Sunday, said Mark Botnick, spokesman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

A total of 823 couples applied for the 764 available spots in all of New York City, CBS reports. With the exception of Manhattan—which had 533 applicants for 400 slots—each borough had at least a little extra room remaining when the lottery closed Thursday afternoon.

Of the 133 Manhattan couples who couldn't be accommodated in their home borough, 74 will be disbursed elsewhere in the city—Queens will absorb 21 such couples. The remaining 59 will be squeezed into the Manhattan clerk's office.

Overall, the Bronx received 52 applications, Brooklyn received 109 and Staten Island received 38.

The lottery was established by the mayor's office , since demand to tie the knot on Sunday initially exceeded the city's capabilities.
