Hurricane Sandy Preparedness Guide

Here are some things you need to know ahead of the storm's arrival.

1. Prepare for Hurricane Sandy. If you have yet to evacuate from Zone A areas, a list of local area shelters is available here.

If you are not in a potential flood plane, residents are still advised to stay indoors as much as possible during the storm to ensure safety.

In the event that other zones are evacuated, you may want to prepare a "Go Bag" with emergency items. New York State advises including "an extra set of house and car keys, credit and ATM cards, as well as cash, bottled water and nonperishable foods, a flashlight, battery-operated radio, first aid kit, and copies of important documents (photo ID, proof of address, insurance cards) in a waterproof portable container."

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stock up on nonperishable foods and snacks should power outages occur across the metro area.

2. Conserve batteries and personal electronics. Hurricane Sandy might cause a blackout. In order to extend the life of your electronics, be sure to stock up on last-minute batteries and don't use personal electronics unless absolutely necessary.

3. All NYC schools are closed.

4. MTA subway and bus service has been suspended. Stay with Patch for continuous reports on when service will be restored.

5. Alternate side parking is suspended. One of the very few benefits of a hurricane is that you do not need to move your car.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
