Halloran Co-Sponsors Property Tax Brochure Bill

Legislation would require the city to explain how property taxes are calculated in a brochure on its website.

City Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, said he has sponsored a bill that will require the Department of Finance to publish a brochure that explains how property taxes are calculated.

The councilman said he worked with the City Council’s Republican Caucus on the bill that would require the city to clearly explain how property taxes are determined.

“Gone are days of vague bills, mystery charges and confusing math,” he said. “Especially in this uncertain financial climate, homeowners and buyers need to know exactly what their property taxes are and why. Increasing transparency in government is always a worthy goal.”

The councilman said his office receives numerous calls from residents confused about their property taxes after each quarterly statement is mailed.

Previously, information on property taxes was spread out in a number of forms and pamphlets on the Department of Finance’s website.

Now, homeowners can download information on how property taxes are determined for one, two and three-family homes.

The local, fresh fruit and vegetable market was a worthwhile addition to Douglaston. Obviously, itRead More did not receive the support of the community, at least not enough to make it a successful venture. This is sad. Every Sunday, rain or shine, I would stop at the market and purchase something. My favorite was the bakery stand. Often, when I stopped in the afternoon I would get two FREE French breads with my purchase. Parking was never a problem. The vendors where friendly and very informative. It was a perfect setting for the picturesque nature of this community. Too bad it is not returning.

Unfortunately, according to the Douglas Manor Association, the fresh fruit and vegetable market willRead More NOT return this year. No specific reason was given other than this was at the initiative of the merchants or the market's organizers. And this..., just as we were beginning to enjoy the Long Island wines and the $34 per pound skirt steak, ordered two months in advance.
