Four Honored at the Jefferson Democratic Club Dinner Dance

An all-star lineup of movers and shakers heads to Douglaston Manor.

More than 100 people attended the Jefferson Democratic Club's 101st annual dinner dance at the regal Douglaston Manor last week.

District Leader Carol Gresser made the opening remarks by welcoming club members, civic leaders, and a host of elected officials. Carol, who is in her first year as district leader, introduced Council Speaker Christine Quinn to much fanfare.

“This club has demonstrated intelligence by the people being honored here tonight,” said Quinn.

The evening was also a chance for the council speaker to address the audience of Northeast Queens residents on critical issues. Quinn spoke of a dysfunctional property tax system and the unemployment rate as a source of major concern.

“Too many people are out of work and it’s getting worse,” she said. “Even when the times are tough we can’t let police officers, fireman, and daycare workers get decimated in the budget,” added Quinn referring to her vocal support of saving from the budget axe this fiscal year.

Honoree Grace Meng, an assemblywoman from Flushing, was humbled by the Club’s distinction as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

Dominick Bruccoleri, owner of Pappazio restaurant, Arthur Cheliotes, president of Local 1180, and Nell and James Wrynn, Sr., who also received the John J. Clabby award for supporting the Democratic Party, were all honored for an unwavering commitment to community service.

Cathy Lomuscio, a member of the Jefferson Club for 12 years, said she was pleased with the smooth running events of the evening.

“I am a civic-minded citizen and that’s why I’m here,” she said while pointing out the slate of high-ranking elected officials who had come to express their support.

Comptroller John Liu, who also attended the event, energized the audience with a call to “take back Congress [from Republicans].”

Ann Jawin, who serves on the Jefferson Club’s Board of Directors, was one of the many guests who said they were glad to be a part of the dynamic club. Jawin, who founded the Center For The Women of NY, a non-profit organization that provides educational services for women said she would definitely attend again in 2012.
