Former State Senator Huntley Wore a Wire: Report

Former state senator will be sentenced later this week.

Former state Sen. Shirley Huntley, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to embezzling money from a nonprofit she ran through her office, wore a wire for the government, NY 1 reported.

In January, Huntley admitted to using as much as $87,000 raised through the nonprofit to pay off a personal credit card and other family expenses.

But NY 1 reported Monday that Huntley has worn a wire for a government and that more corruption arrests could be imminent.

Councilman Dan Halloran, R-Whitestone, and state Sen. Malcolm Smith, D-Jamaica, were recently arrested for their alleged involvement in a scheme to rig the mayoral election by getting Smith on the Republican ballot.

Halloran has since announced that he would not run for reelection this fall, so that he could focus solely on clearing his name.

Additionally, it was recently reported that Bronx Assemblyman Nelson Castro had worn a wire, helping to implicate Assemblyman Eric Stevenson and possibly others. Last Friday, Assemblyman William Boyland was charged with mail fraud.

Mark Peters, a former corruption prosecutor, said he believed that more arrests could be on the way following the revelation that Huntley was wearing a wire.

“We’ve had corruption prosecutions before and, sadly, there’s still corruption in Albany,” he told NY 1. “So, I don’t think we’re done and I don’t think we’re close to done.”

Huntley, who is scheduled for sentencing later this week, could face up to five years in prison.
