FAA Lifts Furloughs on Air Traffic Controllers: Report

Flight delays expected to lessen after FAA sends controllers back to work full-time.

Flight delays were expected to ease up this week after the Federal Aviation Administration suspended furloughs for air traffic controllers this past weekend, 1010 Wins reported.

The FAA announced on Saturday that air traffic controllers, who had been kept off the job due to federal spending cuts, would return to full staffing as of Sunday night.

On Friday, Congress approved a bill that would allow the U.S. Department of Transportation to shift an estimated $250 million within the agency and return 15,000 air traffic controllers to full-time employment, 1010 Wins reported.

President Barack Obama was expected to sign the bill early this week.

The furloughs had been enacted amid sequester cuts at the FAA, which recently ordered all of its 47,000 employees to stay home one day per week to cover the cuts.

Airports across the nation, including LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, were hit with delays last week due to the furloughs.

Obama said last week that canceling the furloughs was merely a quick fix to a larger budget issue, 1010 Wins reported.
