BHCA General Meeting 6/26

BHCA General Meeting 6/26 (Please Spread word)             Dear Community,                                                     Once again I am sending this information about tomorrow's BHCA's meeting. Among other things, it will be a follow-up to our April 24th general meeting which featured Comptroller John Liu addressing "How can we maintain the character of our neighborhoods?" This is an extremely important topic so a good turnout would be most appreciated. Thank you---------Michael Feiner, BHCA President

At our next BHCA general meeting Tuesday, June 26th, 8:00 PM at the Colonial Church, Bell Blvd where Luke Place and 216th Street converge, Manhattan Borough President, Scott Springer, will be on hand to discuss a topic near and dear to our hearts: How can we maintain the character of our neighborhoods? This will be a continuation of our previous meeting when we had as our guest New York City Comptroller John C. Liu. For quite some time now, the BHCA , along with surrounding community boards, the Queens Civic Congress, our elected officials, and many of our fellow Bayside Hills’ residents have been battling the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals as they grant outrageous variance requests from greedy land developers. (Imagine going to battle with resources that formidable and still getting defeated?) Shortly before I wrote this, a variance request went before the BSA to build a church on a nice residential street in Flushing. If this variance is granted, and a large chapel, nearly twice the size allowed under current zoning, is built, a dangerous precedent will be set all over our neighborhoods. Take a look at this rendering, courtesy of the BSA and see for yourselves:
In addition to Borough President Springer, we will be having another “Meet the Merchants Night.” On hand will be William Liao, Bayside Hills resident and BHCA Board member who operates the Queens Health Emporium, 159-01 Horace Harding Expressway. Since 1984, Queens Health Emporium has been supplying its customers with only the very best that the health food industry has to offer. We will also have Michael Fernandez, operator of the new Foodtown of Bayside located on 47-33 Bell Blvd. (The location was previously C-Town) Foodtown has grown to a successful cooperative of 59 independently owned grocery stores. They have 21 supermarket locations in New Jersey, 32 locations in New York, and 6 locations in Pennsylvania. Join us on June 26th and learn about our new supermarket from Michael, who along with William, said he’d be delighted to be there.  As usual, police officers of the 111th Precinct have been invited to give us their update. At our previous meeting our new C.O., Captain Jason Huerta was there to introduce himself and tell us what’s going on in the precinct. Of course there will be our 50-50 raffle and our non perishables food drive once again. This will be our last general meeting before we break for our summer hiatus, so please join us---------Michael Feiner, Bayside Hills Civic Association President
